Justified but Disqualified: The Danger of the Intellectual Fleshly Minded

As a called out believer in the Body of Christ, I occasionally find myself in seasons of deep, troubled reflection. Lately, that heavy reflection has been focused on the brethren I have come to know over the last couple of years.

It grieves my conscience to admit that I have had to quietly step away from most of those associations. I did not walk away because I wanted to be isolated. Deep down I desperately want to be involved and interact with others who share this, Evangel. I walked away because of the sheer amount of anguish, strife, and division I witnessed. I saw endless arguments that gaslight and caused factions that serve absolutely no one any benefit, but distinctly had created an Us vs. Them approach to fellowship.

Watching this behavior within the “acclaimed” grace community of the body broke my heart, but it also forced me to ask a very difficult question:

Is it possible for a believer in the Body of Christ to be disqualified?

To find the answer, I could not rely on my own frustration. I had to look strictly to the Apostle Paul to evaluate the matter. The same Spirit that called me out of the world is the same Spirit currently tugging at my conscience to address this reality, in order to anchor myself back to the peace I enjoy the most.

What I found is that there is a massive blind spot within the grace-based body community.

When a believer finally discovers the absolute sovereignty of God, the myth of eternal torment, and the truth of ultimate reconciliation, an incredible freedom follows. But for many, that freedom is quickly weaponized by the human ego. The carnal mind simply rebrands itself. It stops boasting in its religious good works and begins boasting in its superior theology.

A dangerous, unspoken assumption has taken root. It is the belief that simply possessing the correct translation of the Scriptures and understanding the mechanics of the eons guarantees your participation in the reigning of Christ.

But a strict, mechanical reading of the Apostle Paul’s epistles shatters this assumption.

Paul makes a violent, uncompromising distinction between Justification (the free gift of salvation) and the Allotment (the privilege of the Rewards and reigning with Christ). If you are relying on your correct theology to reward you the prize, while your daily life is driven by intellectual pride and hostility, you are fundamentally misreading the Evangel.

Here is exactly who Paul states will be disqualified from the allotment, even if their theology is perfectly correct.

Justified Salvation Vs. The Prized Allotment

1. The Trap: Confusing Salvation with the Prize

The immediate defense of the carnal intellect is always the same. They shout, “Salvation is by grace, not by works! You cannot lose it!”

That is absolutely true regarding your Justification. Your ultimate salvation was secured completely by the blood of Christ on the cross (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). You cannot lose it. However, the rewards and the privilege to reign with Christ in the oncoming eons is not basic salvation. It is a prize. It is an allotment.

Paul explicitly warns that while your foundation in Christ cannot be destroyed, your building on that foundation can absolutely be burned to ashes.

1 Corinthians 3:15: “If anyone’s work shall be burned up, he will forfeit it, yet he shall be saved, yet thus, as through fire.”

The 2 Timothy 1:9 Deflection

When confronted with the reality of the Dais, the intellectual flesh will instinctively retreat to (2 Timothy 1:9), which states that God “saves us and calls us with a holy calling, not in accord with our acts, but in accord with His own purpose and the grace…” They will use this verse as a shield, claiming that because our acts do not prevent our salvation, our abrasive behavior does not matter.

This is a catastrophic misunderstanding of Paul’s Evangel. Salvation is the baseline accomplishment of the cross. It is the rescue mission guaranteed to all mankind. But salvation is not the prize. The prize is the transformation of the inner man, allowing Christ to operate freely through you in the oncoming eons.

If your inner man fiercely resists this transformation, if you stubbornly maintain your own pride and use grace to excuse your abrasive acts, you are completely secure in your baseline salvation. The arrogant herald will absolutely be Snatched Away because their justification secures their celestial destiny. But you are actively preventing Christ from operating through you.

The carnal mind assumes that because it cannot lose salvation, it cannot lose anything. But Paul warns that you can absolutely lose the privilege of being used by God. At the Dais of Christ, the combative debater will watch every argument, every digital faction, and every ounce of intellectual pride burn to ash. Knowing the correct Greek parsing of a verse does not grant you immunity if the works of your life are built on the combustible material of your own ego.

2. The Definition of The Flesh is Not Just Physical

When the grace community talks about the works of the flesh, they almost exclusively point to the world, political corruption, global empires, or gross immorality, and religious works. They completely ignore how Paul defines the flesh inside the ecclesia.

Look carefully at Paul’s list in Galatians:

Galatians 5:19-21: “Now the works of the flesh are apparent, which are… hostilities, strifes, jealousies, indignations, contentions, divisions, sects, envies… those who are committing such things shall not be enjoying the allotment of the kingdom of God.”

Notice what Paul groups together. He places contentions, strifes, and sects in the exact same category as idolatry and murder.

If a believer uses their knowledge of the Evangel to act like a Pharisee, treating scriptural discussions like a competitive, legalistic courtroom, utilizing coercive trickery, constantly nitpicking, demanding adherence to their specific vocabulary, and causing division through hostility, they are operating entirely in the flesh.

It does not matter if their doctrine is one hundred percent Concordant and pristine in its Greek rendering. If their spirit is contentious, argumentative, and driven by a need to win a debate or be proven right, they are manifesting the absolute peak of the carnal mind. Paul issues a definitive guarantee. Those practicing such things shall not be enjoying the allotment. They will be left with nothing but ashes.

It does not matter if you have spent 50 years of your God given life knowing the absolute truth of Paul’s Evangel. If you are excusing your contentious behavior under the guise of defending the truth, your accumulated decades of knowledge mean absolutely nothing at the Dais. You will be disqualified from the reigning prize unless you allow the cross to correct your course and put that religious ego to death the exact moment the Spirit reveals your error.

3. The Terror of the Perfect Herald

If the Allotment was guaranteed to anyone who simply held the correct intellectual beliefs, the Apostle Paul would have had zero anxiety about his own future. He not only wrote the epistles but completed the Word of God. His theology was flawless.

Yet, Paul was deeply afraid of being left out.

1 Corinthians 9:27: “But I am belaboring my body and leading it into slavery, lest somehow, when heralding to others, I myself may become disqualified.”

The Greek word Paul uses for disqualified is adokimos (unapproved, rejected). He is not afraid of losing his salvation. (Romans 5:18) secures that. He is terrified of losing his place in the out resurrection of the allotment.

Who is the adokimos? It is the herald/messenger who preaches the truth perfectly to others but refuses to subject their own ego to the cross. It is the teacher who uses the Evangel to build a personal platform, secure admiration, or dominate others intellectually. If Paul believed his own flesh could disqualify him from the prize despite his perfect theology, how arrogant must a modern believer be to think their intellect gives them an automatic pass?

The Unashamed Worker vs. The Arrogant Herald

The modern grace community has fundamentally forgotten that correctly cutting the word of truth is only half of Paul’s mandate. In (2 Timothy 2:15), Paul explicitly commands the believer to present themselves “approved” and as an unashamed worker.” It is entirely possible to possess pristine, correctly divided theology while acting as a completely unapproved worker. When a grace believer uses their knowledge of the Evangel to publicly berate, mock, or act nasty toward a fellow Christian who holds flawed theology, they instantly abandon the conduct of the approved workman.

It does not matter if the opposing believer is entirely confused about the eons, the timeline, or the nature of salvation. Treating their ignorance with cruelty, digital hostility, and arrogance transforms the herald of grace into a disqualified bully. At the Dais of Christ, the Lord will not applaud your theological accuracy if you used it as a weapon to humiliate His Body. The arrogant debater will stand deeply ashamed, watching their cruel, flesh-driven defense of the truth completely incinerate. Correctly cutting the word of truth secures the blueprints, but presenting yourself as an approved, gentle, and unashamed worker is the only way to secure the prize.

4. The Practical Disowning

Paul draws a sharp line for those who claim the truth but refuse to endure in humility.

2 Timothy 2:12: “If we are enduring, we shall be reigning together; if we are disowning Him, He also will be disowning us.”

Believers love to quote verse 13 (“if we are disbelieving, He is remaining faithful”) to prove God’s grace. But they ignore the mathematics of verse 12. If we disown Him, He will disown us from reigning.

Disowning Christ is rarely a verbal denunciation of the Evangel. It is a practical disowning. It is a believer who knows God is sovereign, yet reacts to the collapsing economy with sheer, carnal panic. It is a believer who knows the flesh is bankrupt but still relies on their own aggressive intellect to secure their status in a digital community. When you rely on the heart of your own mind, you are practically disowning the leading of His Spirit.

Furthermore, disowning Christ is deeply tied to how we treat the ecclesia. Those who are in Christ are deemed by Christ as Himself. If I treat a brother or sister with patronizing disrespect, avoidance, dismissal, I am doing it directly to Jesus by proxy. If you insult another believer to win a debate, you insult Christ. We are all members of His Body. Therefore, treat it with compassion, lest you love to hurt yourself.

The Chief of Sinners Vs. The Chief of Knowledge

A logical question arises when confronting this terrifying reality. How can the Apostle Paul, a man who literally hunted and murdered believers, be guaranteed the prize of the allotment, while a modern believer who simply argues theology online risks being disqualified?

The carnal mind will immediately cry foul. It seems entirely unbalanced. But looking closely at Paul’s own testimony reveals the exact difference between the crucified flesh and the intellectual flesh.

The Heart of Paul (The Crucified Flesh)

Paul openly admitted he was the foremost of sinners. But he also revealed the context of his actions. He acted in ignorance and in unbelief (1 Timothy 1:13). The moment the absolute grace of Christ intercepted him on the Damascus Road, his ego was completely obliterated.

Paul possessed a massive intellect and an elite Pharisee pedigree. But upon receiving the Evangel, he did not rebrand his old religious arrogance into a new grace arrogance. He counted his entire intellectual pedigree as refuse (Philippians 3:8). He poured out his life as a literal slave to the ecclesia. He endured beatings, shipwrecks, and starvation to build up the body in love and peace. The Evangel destroyed his need to be important.

The Heart of the Disqualified Herald (The Amplified Flesh)

Contrast Paul’s reaction with the modern, contentious herald of grace. This believer receives the exact same revelation of the Evangel. But instead of that truth breaking their ego, it inflates it.

They take the beautiful reality of God’s sovereignty and use it to build a pedestal for themselves. They demand absolute intellectual agreement. They mock and belittle those who are still in orthodox ignorance, completely forgetting that they themselves were once entirely blind to the truth. They take the exact grace that saved Paul and use it to reconstruct the very Pharisee mindset that Paul spent his life tearing down. They sit in the total comfort of their own superiority, engineering strife and dividing the body over vocabulary words and theological concepts of God’s goodness and Christ’s positioning.

The Verdict at the Dais

At the Dais of Christ, the Lord is not evaluating the severity of your past sins. Your past sins were fully justified and eradicated by the blood of the cross. The evaluation for the allotment is entirely about what is running your daily, operational heart as a called messenger of the Evangel.

Paul’s heart was the cross. He was a murderer whose ego was permanently put to death so that Christ could live through him. The contentious debater’s heart is human pride. They are a saved, justified believer whose ego has hijacked the absolute truth to serve themselves.

Christ will snatch away both the repentant murderer and the arrogant debater, because justification is a free gift that secures their celestial destiny. But at the Dais of Christ, the Lord will evaluate their operational hearts. The repentant murderer will receive the allotment because his flesh is dead. The arrogant debater will watch their entire digital ministry incinerate before the Lord, stepping into the eons stripped bare of any reigning authority. Knowing the truth of the Evangel does not give anyone a license to act like the adversary.

Therefore, a believer who recognizes the truth of Universal Reconciliation of mankind through Christ’s accomplishment has just as much potential to destroy what they build on Paul’s foundation as their fellow Christian who stubbornly upholds incorrect theology.

For what shall Christ say to the herald who possesses sound doctrine but harbors a black heart toward their fellow brethren? Shall the Lord applaud and reward those who hurl crude insults at the ignorance and lameness of others? May it not be coming to that!

We can all point to mainstream Christians who live generously and lovingly, even while holding incorrect theology. We must realize that the Evangel is not merely a test of intellectual knowledge. As Paul states, possessing all knowledge without love renders a believer as absolutely nothing for the rewards of the allotment. It is always a full circle evaluation: what you do with the knowledge you were given dictates what you profit at the Dais.

Mocking an orthodox Christian for their theological ignorance is no different than mocking a blind man for his inability to see. Just because you know the absolute truth about Yahweh and Christ does not make the struggling Christian any lesser than yourself. Be humble, be gentle, and be loving to all.

The Foolish Galatians Defense: Severity Versus Mockery

When confronted with their own abrasive behavior, the intellectual flesh will almost always reach for a specific defense. They will point to Paul’s letter to the Galatians, where he writes, “O foolish Galatians, who bewitches you?” (Galatians 3:1).

They will claim that because Paul used strong, insulting language against his opponents, they are fully justified in mocking, belittling, and insulting those who disagree with them online.

This is a gross manipulation of the Scriptures. It takes the pastoral heartbreak of an apostle and uses it to justify the ego of a bully. To see why this defense fails entirely, we must look at the operational heart behind Paul’s words.

1. The Motive of the Father Versus The Ego of the Pharisee
When Paul used the word anoētos (thoughtless, unintelligent, foolish), he was not trying to win a theological debate, and he was certainly not trying to secure an audience by mocking his opponents. Paul was acting as a spiritual father watching his children walk blindly into fatal traffic. His severe language was the desperate shout of a parent pulling a child back from the ledge. His severity was entirely rooted in a self-sacrificing love for their freedom.

The modern contentious debater does not possess this love. When they hurl insults or mock the orthodox believer, they are not crying out in pastoral agony. They are performing. One heart is driven by heartbreak. The other heart is driven by pride.

2. The Target of the Severity
Paul was only ever severe when the Evangel of Grace was being replaced by the legalistic works of the flesh. The ultimate hypocrisy of the abrasive grace herald is that they use Paul’s severity to defend their own works of the flesh. The modern debater uses Paul’s words to excuse their own carnal boasting, contentions, and strife. They have become the exact Pharisees that Paul warned the ecclesia about.

3. Paul’s Explicit Instruction
If Paul wanted believers to mock the ignorant, his direct instructions to young leaders would reflect that. But look at his command to Timothy:

2 Timothy 2:24-25: “Now a slave of the Lord must not fight, but be gentle to all, apt to teach, bearing with evil, in meekness disciplining those who are disposing themselves in opposition…”

Paul explicitly forbids fighting. He mandates gentleness, meekness, and bearing with evil. If you choose to ignore Timothy so that you can weaponize Galatians to excuse your own temper, you are not following Paul. You are simply using the Scriptures to feed your ego. At the Dais of Christ, the Lord knows the difference between the loving correction of a shepherd and the cruel mockery of a wolf.

The Final Excuses of the Carnal Mind

1. The Quarreling About Words Defense
The Excuse: The debater will claim their constant, abrasive arguments over Greek parsing and translation mechanics are a noble defense of the pure text.
The Pauline Strike: Paul explicitly outlaws this exact behavior. (2 Timothy 2:14) commands us not to be quarreling about words, to no useful purpose, but for the subverting of the hearers.”

The debater thinks their aggressive vocabulary doctrinal policing is saving the Evangel. Paul says it is actually destroying the audience.

2. The Knowledge Above All Illusion
The Excuse: They genuinely believe that possessing the absolute truth covers a multitude of behavioral sins.
The Pauline Strike: Paul takes their perfect theology and reduces it to zero if it is not driven by love. (1 Corinthians 13:2) says, “And if I should have all knowledge… yet have no love, I am nothing.”

A grace believer can possess the most flawless Concordant theology on the planet, but if their daily operational heart is void of love, their knowledge counts for zero at the Dais.

3. The Righteous Division Myth
The Excuse: When the contentious herald is called out for causing chaos and tearing communities apart, they will claim it is a righteous division.
The Pauline Strike: Paul does tell us to mark those who cause divisions, but look at who he is talking about. (Romans 16:1718) says those making dissensions are serving “their own bowels” (their own carnal appetites and ego).

The intellectual debater thinks they are dividing the room for the sake of the Evangel. Paul reveals they are dividing the room to feed their own pride.

The Final Reality: The Proof of the Quiet Life

This brings us to the ultimate correction.

The Snatching Away is an absolute, unconditional guarantee for anyone who is sealed by the Evangel of Grace. The combative, arrogant, and abrasive heralds will absolutely be rescued from the earth, because their justification does not depend on their behavior. They will not be left behind for the Indignation.

But the Dais of Christ is not an evacuation plan. It is a strict, terrifying tribunal of your works as a member of the body.

God does not reward the temper tantrums of the intellectual ego. If someone’s identity is wrapped up in being the smartest person in the room, if they use grace as a license to be patronizing, arrogant, crass, or cruel (even sarcastically), even if they are deeply tied to the digital quarrels of this world, they are proving that their flesh is still entirely in control.

When the evaluation at the Dais occurs, all of that arrogant, legalistic theological history (YouTube, forums, discord, reddit, etc.) will burn up like wood, hay, and stubble. They will step into eternity saved but completely stripped of the prize.

There is a profound reason the Apostle Paul did not instruct the ecclesia to build massive platforms, launch patronizing ministries, or spend their days hyper critically diagnosing the faults of others for their theology. His ultimate instruction for daily living is the exact opposite of the modern intellectual teacher and debater who spends their time online creating YouTube videos, hosting live streams, and writing publications to slander brethren whose positions differ from their own.

1 Thessalonians 4:11: “And to be ambitious to be quiet, and to be engaged in your own affairs, and to be working with your hands, according as we charge you…”

The greatest ambition of the genuine believer is not to be the loudest voice in the room, but to be quiet. For those who are ambitious to be quiet, who yield their desperate need to be right, outspoken, and dogmatic, and who allow the Evangel to put their ego permanently to death, the ultimate celestial allotment awaits you.
